Sutherland with cup
The annual shinty match for the Kenny "Nostie" MacLeod Memorial cup was played at Thurso's Viewfirth Green between Caithness and Sutherland today. A good crowd or around 150 watched a close match with lots of action. Shinty is not for the feint hearted as three players ended up in hospital with broken fingers and a nasty ankle knock.

Sutherland took the lead in the first half against the run of play and held on until around 10 mins to go when Stewart Macrae equalised for Caithness after lots of pressure. 10 mins of extra time produced no goals. Sutherland scored once in the penalty shoot-out and that was enough to win. The Sutherland keeper had a brilliant save in the shoot-out to stop Caithness equalising.

Kenny MacLeod's widow, Marianna, presented the cup and medals. Player of the Match was Caithness's Andy Hunt.

Shetland beat Thurso 5-4 on penalties in a cup match at the Dammies in Thurso today. An exciting open game with lots of goalmouth action, ended 1-1. Thurso striker Marc MacGregor scored the opening goal mid-way through the first half, against the run of play, with a cracking 30 yard shot which flew into the postage stamp corner. Shetland replied immediately when Calvin Leask beat Graeme Williamson with a low drive at his near post.

Both keepers made excellent saves and both teams hit the bar in a cracking game. Thurso's Sean Stewart got two yellow cards and was sent off in extra time.

Halkirk beat Orkney 3-2 in Orkney. Wick Academy beat Rothes 7-0 in Rothes. Gary Weir scored 3.

Caithness RFC beat Mackie Academy 51-29 in an away league game.

Halkirk Utd stay top of the league with a 7-3 win over Clachnacuddin at Morrison Park. Halkirk couldn't get into gear and were 2-0 down after 30mins. Gordy MacNab scored a penalty just before half-time. I then had to leave to catch the Caithness rugby match and so missed all the goals in the second half.

Thurso lost 3-0 at home to Sutherland Utd. Wick won 6-0 away to Coldstream in the Scottish cup.
